Back in 1990, when your Director, Peter Santino, was first bringing FAILURE INSTITUTE into existence, the primary goal was to establish some sort of "marker" at the turn of the Millennium. Originally, the idea was related specifically to Fine Art and aimed at utilizing the peculiar nature of the upcoming date change. We hoped that a break for a time of reflection could be taken right at this very interesting point in the flow of cultural history. It seems we have succeeded in our "failure" beyond our wildest dreams and would like to take this opportunity to CLAIM FULL CREDIT (or perhaps, blame) for willing the idea of a Y2K Problem into existence. While it is true that the very first mention of a date code problem was back in 1979, it was known only to a few programmers and probably would have had no noticable effect on society without the pioneering efforts of FAILURE INSTITUTE.
A link to a very old (1994) copy of "the original FAILURE INSTITUTE running on NCSA Mosaic" is provided here as proof for those skeptical of the above claims. Mosaic Netscape Archival Page
Those who wish to thank FAILURE INSTITUTE for providing this interesting "marker in the flow of cultural history" may choose to write "Thanks" on the back of a US$20 note or "Thanks a lot" on the back of a US$50 note (or the equivilant in local currency) and send it to:
